"Friends can make you laugh like no one else can."

These inspirational words were said by 'anonymous' - a person who was still somebody's friend, I'm sure.

  • These words sum up the love and delight that friendship can bring. As do the free inspirational poems and famous poems listed below.

  • And can there be a more famous inspirational poem than Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burne? Perhaps there can, but the words of Rabbie Burns are oft repeated at the end of each year by thousands and thousands whose hearts pound with love...

Oops, even I am becoming inspired, 'poetically' so, when it comes to talking about friendship. But it's time for the real poets to have their say...

(Oh this collection of inspirational friendship poems is only small. And I'm sure you can think of other poems that could go here, too. So... please do get in touch with your suggestions!)

"Auld Lang Syne" - what Robert Burns has to say...

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

CHORUS
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there's a hand, my trusty fere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.

CHORUS

By Robert Burne

Inspirational friendship poems - what H. W. Longfellow has to say...

I Shot an Arrow into the Air

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

by H. W. Longfellow

Now for some less famous poems, but nevertheless these are still inspirational friendship poems - I hope you enjoy! And if you have a suggestion for this page please let me know!

Friends

A friend is someone we turn to
when our spirits need a lift.
A friend is someone we treasure
for our friendship is a gift.
A friend is someone who fills our lives
with beauty, joy, and grace.
And makes the whole world we live in
a better and happier place.

I believe in angels,
The kind that heaven sends,
I am surrounded by angels,
But I call them friends.

by Aizabel Parinas

What Is A Friend?

A friend is somebody
Who knows you and likes you
Exactly the way that you are.

Someone who's special
And so close in thought
That no distance can ever seem far.

A friend understands you
Without any words,
Stands by you
When nothing goes right.

And willingly talks
Over problems with you
Till they somehow
Just vanish from sight.

And whether you're neighbors
Or live miles apart,
A word from a friend gives a lift
To your heart and spirit.

That shows you once more
Why friendship is life's dearest gift!

The Perfect Friend

Today I found a friend
who knew everything I felt
she knew my weakness
and the problems I've been dealt.
She understood my wonders
and listened to my dreams,
she listened to how I felt about life and love
and knew what it all means.
Not once did she interrupt me
or tell me I was wrong
she understood what I was going through
and promised she'd stay long.
I reached out to this friend,
to show her that I care
to pull her close and let her know
how much I need her there.
I went to hold her hand
to pull her a bit nearer
and I realized this perfect friend I found
was nothing but a mirror.

May our friendship last forever

May our friendship last forever;
May I sail upon your sea.
May we go through life together;
May there always be a "we."
May I be your endless sky;
May you breathe my gentle air.
May you never wonder why
Each time you look for me, I'm there.

May we be for each a smile
Like the warm, life-giving sun;
Yet when we're in pain awhile,
May our suffering be one.

May we share our special days,
The happiness of one for two;
And if we must go separate ways,
Let my love remain with you.
